Chess is complex, because you have to make projections based off the actions of an opponent under severe time constraints with imperfect information. Sim City was complex, with eight different systems that needed to be interwoven to create sufficient value to attract ai buyers. This game isn’t complex, it just uses a braindead ui to obfuscate simple arbitrage. Why is it that every time I complain about a game having a shit ui, people fire back with “the game is complex”. Have you ever seen anything that ridiculously fucking retarded? There’s no way some well intentioned person put that together by accident. Nope, there’s no way this UI could be this bad by accident.
With X3, it’s not that the UI is difficult to manage. Eve Online is a great example here, with the UI constantly tripping over itself. In the shittiest games, the UI is in the way or provides insufficient information. Like, EU3 the UI doesn’t really impede your actions, but it doesn’t really assist them either. In most games, it’s just a neutral sort of thing. Like in the Total War games, where most tasks are trivial thanks to the UI. In the best games, the UI actively assists the player. So I have no trouble with learning curves, especially when there are people I can manipulate, lie to, and generally use to dodge the bullshit activities of the game. Within my first month, I had already fc’d a few capital fleets and was reorganizing an existing (and very shit) nullsec alliance, an alliance that later fell apart when I looted a good chunk of the assets and fled. Within a week of EVE I had taken over a mercenary corporation, robbed two other corps and was generally doing fine. I don’t mind steep and confusing learning curves.
To be honest, X games are an accquired taste, and my play sessions of it only max out at about an hour at a time before I have to do something more coherent. So I guess you’re twice fucked on this one. The game is complex, and even if it didn’t have a shit, obfuscated UI, it still has a legitimate, steep learning curve that crushes anyone hoping to hop in and shot the alians.X3 is a complex game, a bare minimum of effort on the player’s part is kind of needed just by the very nature of it (although, as said, the in-game stuff could certainly be better at pointing these things out to players).
